Interior Design Business Strategy in Practice at the BOH Panel

Yates Desygn was recently invited to take part in a panel discussion hosted by Business of Home, bringing together leading voices in the Dallas design community to explore interior design business strategy, and what it takes to build a thoughtful, well-positioned design business.

Moderated by Business of Home Editor in Chief Kaitlin Petersen, the conversation featured Bryan Yates and Mike Yates of Yates Desygn, alongside Javier Burkle of Burkle Creative and Jean Liu of Jean Liu Design.

The conversation focused on the foundational work required to establish a strong, differentiated design firm, and the role that vision, process, and positioning play in shaping every client interaction.

The Role of Vision in Design Firm Positioning

At the center of the discussion was a simple but often overlooked idea: a clear vision is not just a statement, it is a working tool.

For design firms operating at a high level, vision informs how decisions are made, how projects are approached, and how clients experience the process from beginning to end. It creates consistency across every touchpoint, allowing the work to feel cohesive without relying on a fixed aesthetic.

This idea closely reflects how Yates Desygn has built its practice, focusing on clarity and intention rather than trends or a predetermined style.

A Decade of Refining the Interior Design Process

Over the past decade, Yates Desygn has developed a process designed to bring clarity, confidence, and structure to every project.

Rather than leaving decisions to chance, the studio’s approach is built around thoughtful planning, detailed documentation, and a clear understanding of how each space needs to function. This level of precision allows clients to move through complex projects with confidence, knowing that every detail has been considered.

This commitment to process was a key part of the panel conversation, particularly in how it supports both creativity and execution.

Building the Right Team for Creativity and Efficiency

One of the most practical areas of discussion centered on team structure.

Bryan and Mike shared how building the right team has been essential to balancing creativity with efficiency. In a studio environment, these two forces can often feel at odds, but when structured correctly, they reinforce one another.

A strong team allows ideas to develop fully while ensuring that projects move forward with clarity and purpose. It also creates an environment where different perspectives contribute to the final outcome, resulting in work that feels layered and considered.

Communication as a Foundation for Design Leadership

Another key theme was communication.

Regular team meetings and consistent touchpoints were highlighted as essential tools for maintaining alignment across projects. Clear communication ensures that everyone involved understands not just what is happening, but why.

For a design firm, this level of clarity is critical. It supports better decision-making internally and leads to a more seamless experience for clients.

A Shared Perspective on Value Over Aesthetics

A particularly meaningful takeaway from the discussion was the shared emphasis on positioning design firms around value, rather than purely aesthetics.

This reflects a broader shift within the industry, where clients are increasingly looking for expertise, guidance, and a well-managed process, not just a finished look.

As one attendee noted:

“The opportunity to hear this group of talented role models in the Dallas design industry speak about their businesses was extraordinarily valuable for our young firm. Hearing about how they individually position their firms from a value perspective to their clients instead of a purely aesthetic one was eye opening and something I want to develop,” said Georgia Whitley of Linq & Whit

Continuing the Conversation

Opportunities like this create space not just to share ideas, but to reflect on them.

For Yates Desygn, participating in the BOH Accelerator Series panel was an opportunity to contribute to an ongoing conversation about how design firms can operate with greater clarity, intention, and consistency.

It also reinforces something that has guided the studio from the beginning: when the foundation is strong, the work that follows feels considered, cohesive, and built to last.
